This is an industry in a perpetual state of flux, grappling with industry convergence and consolidation as well as constant innovation. But thanks to the endless influx of new players and new products, it’s forecast to experience moderate growth with pockets of high growth, particularly digital. It’s an industry with low entry barriers and low initial start-up costs, but on the other hand, there’s stiff competition within the industry due to the presence of heavyweight global corporates. Further, growing businesses’ scalability depends on capital investment because of the cost of digital equipment and the need for physical premises. However, there are advantages to be had through accessing high-growth emerging markets in Asia as well as through developing new revenue streams (for example, through social media apps’ advertising space or digital display advertising). The dominant sub-sector is Search Engine Marketing, but creating digital advertising content and social media marketing/management are also strong.

While a knowledge gap does exist in the workforce, there are great opportunities for highly-skilled MarTech candidates as well as those with skills relevant to back-end development (for security, privacy and enhanced user experience).
